Top 9 of 2018

2018 has been one of my personal favorite years for new music, especially within the alternative-rock and indie scene. I've encountered so many new releases and spent the whole year enjoying them, so now, I want to share my experience with everyone else; I've compiled my top 9 favorite albums and singles from 2018 (in no particular order) as a celebration of the end of the year. Additionally, I've included my "Favorite Releases of 2018" playlist on Spotify for anyone to take a peek at:)

Without any further ado, I present my top nine:

Top 9 Albums:

1. The Wrecks- Panic Vertigo EP

2018 was was without a doubt The Wrecks’ year; although this addition to the album list is an EP, it has delivered some of The Wrecks’ most significant growth and proven to be just as successful as any standard album. Between non-stop supporting tours and even embarking on their own headlining tour, this band is unstoppable, even with their discography of only 8 songs! Panic Vertigo captures the basics of an alt-indie group, but brings something entirely different and personal to the table. The Wrecks are bound to grow even more in 2019, especially with their debut album (which will hopefully be formally announced and released soon).

2. State Champs- Living Proof

State Champs stays true to their pop-punk roots with this flawless record. Singles such as “Dead and Gone” and “Frozen” show that rock is still alive in the best way possible. From performing on the mainstage of the final Vans Warped Tour this year to selling out intimate dive-bar shows, the energy never dies with this band; 2019 is sure to treat them well.

3. The 1975- A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships

One of the only ways that I can ever describe The 1975 is that they are pure artists at heart. Their albums always contain an energy that can’t be put into words, and it’s obvious that they continued this streak with their latest release. A Brief Inquiry is clever, unique, and beyond the bounds of artistic; it has a sound that differs from the last two records while providing a perfect transition between each era.

4. Waterparks- Entertainment

Waterparks’ sophomore album explores so many different sounds while staying true to their previous styles. It’s rare (pun intended) to find an album that’s braver than Entertainment; this record is a melting pot of acoustic guitars, thrilling drums, and unique elements of computer-based production. Every song serves as the perfect example of Waterparks’ musical evolution and increased confidence as a band.

5. With Confidence- Love and Loathing

I never turn down the opportunity to recommend this album to fans of alternative or pop punk music. With Confidence continues their streak of creating incredible pieces of music with this record. Each song is a story within itself and keeps the audience entertained from the first note in "That Something" until the very last chord of "Tails."

6. Super Whatevr- Never Nothing

Indie rock has never sounded better. The mix of passionate, raspy vocals and catchy guitar riffs sets the scene for the album’s addicting sound. Super Whatevr has such a bright future ahead of them in 2019, it’s undeniable that this band has endless talent.

7. Morgxn- vital

I’ve never seen or heard any other artist who has more soul and kindness in their heart than Morgxn. His music is a perfect demonstration of how much he cares about music and the effect it has on the audience. Vital addresses the importance of the listener through emotion-gripping lyrics, Morgxn’s lovely voice, and hypnotizing instrumentals; his long-running message of “you are what is vital to me” is definitely apparent through his music.

8. The Hunna- Dare

One of the first things I thought to myself after listening to this record for the first time was “wow.” Although this thought might seem cliche, I seriously can’t emphasize enough how incredible each song on this record is. Dare is emotional and energizing all at once; The Hunna has created a collection of songs that anyone can truly enjoy. This album’s variety of tempo and style is sure to please any and all music lovers.

9. Weathers- Kids In The Night

Each song from Weathers’ debut album makes you want to get up and dance like no one’s watching. Kids In The Night is the embodiment of a late night drive under the city lights; there’s a wonderful energy that radiates from this album. Weathers have the ability to bring a smile to anyone’s face, whether it’s with their catchy lyrics, danceable melodies, or energizing live performances.
